The first of the Sonic Games was released on 23rd June, 1991 and the latest of the series, ‘Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympics’ was released on 15th November, 2011. All these intervening years have brought about a lot of change but, there are still some features that stand as a trademark in sonic games. Four of these common features are listed below –
1. Golden Rings Sonic games have evolved over the years but a few things have not changes. The collectible golden rings that are spread through all the levels are still a distinct feature of all Sonic games. If the player has one ring, he can survive any continuous damage from the enemy. So, instead of dying because of the damage, you lose a ring but if you are hit, you lose all the rings. They get scattered and you have very less time to collect them again or they disappear.
2. Chaos Emeralds Most of the games consist of 7 emeralds that have magical powers. Their powers include harnessing power from thoughts, Space and warp time using chaos control, a unique Sonic technique and providing energy to all live things. If you have the emeralds, you can also create laser or nuclear weapons. The player needs these emeralds for defeating Doctor Eggman and achieving ‘good endings’. The method of collection of the emeralds depends upon the titles. In some of the classic games, the player had to find them in Special Stages and in quite a number of modern games the emeralds were plot elements. Some games like Sonic R, Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 requires the payers to find the emeralds inside the Zones.
3. Master Emeralds The Master Emeralds first made its appearance in “Sonic & Knucles”. It has the power to negate the Chaos Emerald’s energy, provide power to mechanic devices. The power of the Emeralds is such that Dr. Robotnik steals the Master Emerald in Sonic and Knuckles. He uses it to give power to Death Egg, a ship. The Master Emerald shatters in the Sonic Adventure and has to be collected by Knuckles. It even provides the power to Mecha Sonic enabling him to change into a super form.
4. Special Stages With so much talk of common factors, it would not be right to leave out the Special Stages that is used by the players to collect Chaos Emeralds. The environment of these stages is surreal. The main feature of Special Stages is gameplay instead of standard platform of main levels. If you have played Sonic the Hedgehog, you will remember the giant maze that kept rotating. This was a technical achievement loved by many fans. This was an exceptional stages but the common stages included segments in which the character ran through a tunnel to collect some items.
