4 Reasons Everybody Should Consider Getting a Computer Science Degree

We’re currently living in the digital age and the demand for computer science majors is greater than ever. Technology is part of everything we do and it is infiltrating almost every aspect of our lives. But still, many technologically inclined students may still be on the fence as to whether a computer science major is truly for them. In this article, we’re going to give you four compelling reasons you should consider majoring in computer science.

Computers Are All Around Us

Computers play a major role in our lives and will continue to do so for years to come. The demand for computer scientists shows no sign of slowing down and job prospects are better in this field than in other STEM related fields. For instance, computer science majors were 35% more likely to land a full time position one year after they graduated college than other college students. In addition, computer science majors had a 22% higher rate of employment compared to other STEM related professionals.

Recession Proof

One of the other major advantages of working in computer science is that it is an almost recession proof field. Companies are constantly looking for new talent when it comes to computing jobs. According to the Bureau of Labor statistics, computer science jobs are set to grow by 12% to 37% leading to 2022.

Endless Future Opportunities

Trying to forecast what the future will look like as far as computer science goes is almost impossible. It is very possible that most of our devices will be connected to the internet in some way, shape or form in a not so distant future.

This will give rise to a whole set of opportunities for computer scientists. The IOT will bring with it a variety of security concerns and computer scientists will be called to implement and develop solutions for this new reality. It is estimated that the number of connected devices will exceed Earth’s population by 2020, and making sure that new networks are secure and resilient enough to withstand the demand will be the job of those graduating computer science today.

All these reasons should convince you to at least consider a major in computer science. Many online universities such as the New Jersey Institute of Technology offer great programs for those who would like to study at distance, or would like to add some feathers to their cap while they keep their current position.

Computing science is clearly the wave of the future, and anyone with a solid computer science degree should have no problem landing a position in the current job climate.
