The First Steps in Setting Up an Online Store

If you want to be in business for yourself and you want to start small, running a business online can be a great way to start. If you love retail, you can easily start an online store that features products you have made or the favorite products you love to sell. Before launching your store, you will need to take some important steps first to set up everything you need.

Start with the Right Tools

The first step in starting an online store is to choose your domain name. This web address will be associated with your business and will essentially be the face of your business online. The address should be as short as possible but still easily describe your site.

After the domain, you will need to choose a web host. You can choose from a wide variety of hosting options, but you can easily start small and upgrade as your site takes off. When the domain and web host are chosen, you can begin looking for the shopping cart and payment gateway you want to choose. The shopping cart script or software will allow shoppers to keep track of the items they are considering purchasing from your site. Once they are ready to make a purchase, your payment gateway will handle the credit and debit card transactions so you can get paid.

Set Up the Website

Now that you have your tools, you can begin setting up the website. This is the step where you will install the shopping cart software, add product information to your store, and create the overall design of the store. Some business owners find it easier to use pre-made storefronts, while others want to have control over every element of the site. It is up to you to use what you feel most comfortable with.

Customize Categories and Products

Before launching, you will want to customize all of your products and categories so that your customers can easily find what they are looking for. Customizing the products will also mean that you provide your own unique description of the products so customers know the specifics of what they are buying.

Launch Your Store

Now that everything is set up, you are ready to launch your store. With a great marketing campaign, you can get customers coming to see what you have within the first few hours after launch.

  1. Thank you for that guide. I 100% agree with what you have said but you have made things sound a bit easier than they are. Setting up an actual store is not too difficult, the difficulty comes in when you need to start making money with the store and this is why so many online stores are owned by companies who in turn run many different stores. A good example of that are the owner’s of Lenskart, Bagskart, Jewelskart and Watchkart. They have opened 4 stores with very different customers and are in that way getting a feel for the market and determining what it is that consumers want.

  2. I’ll tell you this Pulkit, anyone who sees their way out to have an online store has my admiration. I only about a year ago set up my website and generally rely on affiliate links to generate a bit of an income. Maybe once I have a lot more experience on the web I’ll consider this, until then, I’ll leave it to teh experts like yourself!
