Early this week, Yahoo introduced the newest member of the company who will lead them to success – Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer. CEO Marissa Meyer was the 20th engineer employee of Google who brought so many great things to the latter. Although she was known to be as one of the geek employees of her previous company which she proudly wore for the last 13 years at Google, it’s not only Yahoo who’s expecting big things from her. CEO Marissa Mayer will (and I think should) be facing one of Yahoo’s dying product – Flickr. Flickr, for those who are not aware of is one of the best and popular Yahoo products for the young, hipsters and hobbyists photographers back in 2005. Flickr website was launched in 2004 and was acquired by Yahoo in 2005. Truly, it has been one of the best places for photographers and young users to put up their portfolios until 2008 when Flickr started dying.
If Flickr was already dying, then why the new Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer does needs to fix the former? I always thought that if there are still people who believes to the power of a certain product then it can still survive and there will always be hope for it. I may be wrong but who knows? With CEO Marissa Mayer coming into the rescue along with her wits and geeky mind. I am pertaining to this big cry from all of the people who wishes for the new CEO of Yahoo to make Yahoo! and Flickr awesome again. The calling is literally big and you can even check the dedicated domain http://dearmarissamayer.com/ which bears only a page with this big sign “Dear Marissa Mayer, PLEASE MAKE flickr AWESOME AGAIN“. And not only that, there’s a Twitter campaign with a hash tag #dearmarissamayer.
As far as I can remember especially when I was still in college, Yahoo! was one of the biggest names in the world wide web especially with their search engine feature. But can CEO Marissa Mayer really find a way to revive and relive the once famous online photo-sharing website? I don’t have an answer for that but in my honest opinion, there’s still hope since there are still loyal users and not to mention some regular users like me whom uses Flickr services up to now. But it’s not going to be easy since there are so many new and enhanced online photo-sharing websites. The path to make Flickr “awesome” again is going to be rough and bumpy. And by the way, we should not take Facebook lightly and out of the picture. Facebook is widely used nowadays and even by almost all photographer enthusiasts. Also, there’s the Facebook branding where users can make use of this social networking website to promote their products. If we look back a little, Facebook’s plan to strengthen its mobile photo for mobile technology seems close to reality with Instagram, Facebook camera, and Face.com. I think this will be CEO Marissa Mayer’s best shot, to utilize the power of mobile technology and the principles of social networking.
Well, I am not CEO Marissa Mayer and it’s just a thought. Who really knows what’s her plans to improve and make Yahoo! products awesome once again? Only she can answer that. If you love Flickr and other Yahoo! products, express your support by re-tweeting #dearmarissamayer with a message asking to make Yahoo and Flickr awesome once again.
