Selling mobile phones: what are my options?

If you’re planning to upgrade your mobile phone to a flashy new iPhone or Samsung Galaxy S, have you given a thought to what you will do with your old one?

Many of us like to keep one or two mobiles in the house ‘just in case’. After all, we couldn’t live without our mobiles for a few days! But perhaps you will try and sell it to raise some funds towards your new handset.

The most important thing is to remember not to throw it in the bin, as it could end up contributing to environmental damage and causing harmful illnesses.

Mobile Phones and sale sticker

Long gone are the days when you had to find a willing buyer for your mobile phone. If you want to sell Samsung Tocco handsets or any other old device, you’re unlikely to find someone wanting to part with their cash. However, one of the online recycling specialists will often be up for spending a few quid on one of these old mobiles.

How does it work?

Firstly, you’ll need to find a mobile recycling company, such as Music Magpie. Once you’re on the website, type the make and model of the phone in question and find out how much it is worth.

Once you’ve completed your online order, you will be given details on how to send your handset to the company. Some will simply provide a Freepost address or prepaid envelope, whereas others operate a courier service.

When the mobile has been received and verified as in good nick, you will receive your payment via your preferred method.

How much will I get?

It has been found that some recycling companies were contacting their customers after receiving the phone and slashing their offer price. This is usually due to the fact that people haven’t been too honest with their description of the condition – if it has a scratch on it, make sure you say so as you’ll only end up disappointed.

Other options

Of course, you could always sell your mobile to a friend or family member and get some cash that way. This may be a good option for people with a relatively new model that they want to offload, but it’s not likely to be lucrative for outdated devices.

There are other options too, perhaps more traditional ones, such as:

  • Car boot – who wants to get up at 6am to try and raise a few quid?
  • Online auction – the fees associated with placing items up for sale will cut your profits.

Benefits to recycling

One of the main benefits to sending your phone away to be recycled is that you can get cash for old mobiles that you believed to be worthless. No one is going to want to pay money for a handset that’s over a decade old, but a recycling company will. Another huge advantage is that you are helping the environment without any effort on your part at all and help towards to low Rare Earth Mineral stocks that threaten to end smartphones as we currently know them.

I am a keen smartphone user with a passion for helping the environment. There are plenty of ways to sell Samsung Tocco mobile phones online but I believe recycling them is the best bet. See if you could make some extra cash from your old mobiles by visiting reputable recycling sites today.
